We use the Ram Promaster 3500 159 High Roof Extended. This model allows us to fit everything needed into the van design, and it allows the customer the best overall features.
While Sprinter makes a quality van, we believe there are compelling disadvantages. These include diesel engine (high cost of ownership, more noise, higher fuel cost, high mtc costs), narrower van body which makes the inside crampy, and higher initial cost.
These vans are built with the absolute highest quality materials and workmanship. The components are the best in class – no corners are cut with cheap components. These vans are designed to hold up to life on the road.
After considerable research we chose to use the Promaster for the following reasons:
1. High quality with great reputation. The Promaster has been around in Europe for decades under the Fiat name. The drivetrain and transmission comes highly regarded for durability.
2. Cargo Space – The Promaster has the best cargo space for converting into a home on wheels. The width allows more side-to-side space for the kitchen and bathroom. The bedroom configuration allows the bed to run side-to-side. The height, while slightly less than the Sprinter allows for a very comfortable interior height for most people.
3. Gasoline engine. While diesel has a reputation for it’s higher torque and power, it comes at a price. Diesel fuel is more expensive and harder to find on the road. Maybe a bigger issue though is modern diesel engines comes with high maintenance costs.
4. Maneuverability – The Promaster can be parked really anywhere. The length is such that most parking lots can accommodate the van. The turning radius is comfortable and allows easy turning in tight spots.
As of now, we only sell pre-built vans. This allows us to save money on the design and build phase by having a planned and working design. We have chosen a design that can accommodate a wide range of users.
Absolutely! The vans are designed to hold up to the rigors of heavy use. They are designed to be travel vans and are best designed for off-the-grid life. The size is perfect to navigate all roads and parking areas. The electrical system is DC power based and can function well without ever plugging into a shore power source.
We have tested and measured gas mileage for average driving which includes more highway miles with some off-highway touring. We expect you will get between 15 and 16 miles per gallon.
This van drives more like a car and less like a truck. The 10 speed automatic transmission is smooth and the engine is powerful. It maneuvers very well with a great turning radius. Our experience with these vans has convinced us that anyone can enjoy driving and get very comfortable with day-to-day use.
